Resumen
This work was elaborated looking to study and to create a prototype of a sustainable
public toilet for implantation in the municipality of Natal in Rio Grande do Norte. In this
context, measures were proposed to encourage sustainable practices, through the exploration
of a graywater reuse system from the lavatory and the utilization of rainwater collected from
an area of approximately 6.7m², both for use in the toilet flush water. It was also proposed the
use of photovoltaic solar energy off-grid, which makes the toilet energy self-sufficient. It was
adopted as a constructive technique the use of marine containers reused, there are several
possibilities for aesthetic changes in them and it can be transported according to need. It was
also tried to present the advantages in making public toilets of this type available in the city,
among them, the improvement in the quality of life, reduction of odors in public areas,
promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities, as well as contributing to the
dissemination of environmental awareness. It was found that in Natal there is a deficit of
public toilets built, where it was verified that a part of them are closed because of the lack of
maintenance and acts of vandalism. Moreover, it was verified the need of implantation de
toilets in places such as free fairs, squares, sidewalks and beaches, contributing to foment the
tourism potiguar. The cost for the construction and installation of the toilet is variable, being
the way to make the sanitary sewage one of the factors that influences the value of the
investment. It is also considered that with the history of high expenses in public works the
implantation of sustainable public toilets is viable.
