Resumen
This work studied polyester resin compositions for application in oil well plug and
abandonment operations. Systems containing pure polyester resin and resin with
mineral filler and thixotropic agent were prepared and tested. The resin
compositions were characterized by infrared where characteristic bands of
polyester and styrene monomers were identified in all systems and even with the
addition of the thixotropic agent and mineral filler, there was no chemical
interaction between the added solids and the resin. Compressive strength (RC),
rheology and stability tests were performed. The pure polyester resin showed an
RC value above 90 MPa for all curing times, a result 12 times above the minimum
required for abandonment operations (7 MPa). The rheological parameters
classify all systems as Newtonian fluids. The addition of 5% mineral filler, by mass
of resin, decreased the apparent viscosity of the resin in all systems in which
these concentrations were present and the system with the best results in all tests
was the system with 0.1 thixotropic agent and 5% mineral filler. Based on the
results presented, the polyester resin proved to be promising for application in
buffering operations and abandonment of oil wells.
