In view of the diversification of the energy matrix through renewable energy sources, many opportunities arise to compose this scenario, aiming at the better use of clean energy generation and adding new functionalities to the system. The use of solar irradiation through photovoltaic modules has been one of the solutions sought for generation considering that it is a source immune to the risk of shortages due to its abundance. Despite the benefits that a photovoltaic system provides, we are still looking for a more independent scenario, in which not only the consumer can produce his own energy, but also store it for use during peak hours and even provide ancillary services to favor power grid performance, which can be obtained by adding an battery energy storage system.
These systems can facilitate the greater integration of renewable energy generation, as proven in several countries, by generating several benefits for the electricity grid, in addition to providing energy independence to the consumer. Based on this scenario, this work aims at modeling photovoltaic systems connected to the electrical network with a battery storage system, as well as presenting the benefits of this interaction. A review on the topic is presented, focusing on the benefits that a battery energy storage system can provide, notably those based on lithium ion batteries.
