Nutrição parenteral em cães e gatos: revisão de literatura

Abstract

Nutritional therapy is currently underutilized in the care of hospitalized dogs and cats, even know that malnutrition negatively impacts over wound healing, immune function, muscular strength, length of hospitalization and clinical outcome. Therefore, assessment of nutritional status and institution of a nutritional support program are essential in the management of critically ill patients. Parenteral nutrition (PN) provides nutrients to patients who are unable to tolerate enteral feeding, and is an essential method of support to a determined population of patients. PN enfolds techniques that are not routine, and clinicians must be aware of them to avoid serious complications. The objective of this paper is to review the main aspects of PN in dogs and cats, in order to helping clinicians in the prescription, prepare and administration of PN in a controlled manner, to optimize this therapy.
