Resumen
Introduction: Population aging is a universal event, characteristic of both developed and de-veloping countries. The progressive increase in population life expectancy implies increased morbidity from chronic degenerative diseases, which are often disabling and determinants of increase in public health spending in developed countries. Among the elderly, one of the most prevalent health problems is low back pain and is associated with high cost of health, disabil-ity and absence from work. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and charac-terize the comorbidities in older adults with low back pain. Materials and Methods: This is an observational study, cross, composed of a subsample of the initial cohort, multicenter epidemiological study to evaluation of acute complaints of low back pain Back Complaints in the Elders in Brazil (BACE-B). The study included individuals aged over 65 years affected by a new episode of low back pain. Exclusion criteria were present severe physical or cognitive impairments that prevent them from conducting evaluations. To characterize the sample were used demographic, clinical and functional variables. The as-sessment of comorbidities was through self-administered Comorbidity Questionnaire. Results: This study included 386 of the elderly aged over 55 years with a mean of 71.6 (± 5.25 years). The sample mostly consisted of women, married, with low income and low education. The health problems most prevalent were high blood pressure and problems in the cervical spine, shoulders, knees and feet. Regarding the prevalence of comorbidities, there was a high num-ber of comorbidities in the sample investigates on average were 5.07 (± 2.57) of comorbidities per patient. Conclusion: Our results indicate an association of increased comorbidity with complaints of the lower back. In this sense it is important to consider the occurrence of comorbidities in older adults with low back pain, it can negatively influence the complaints and symptoms in this population.
