The study of the ways in which the design is made in mega projects, called capital projects, have grown in importance, both in academia and business, especially in the industrial segments. In this context, it becomes important to study and evaluate the level of maturity or definition of the design phase of these projects. This research work points out a comparative analysis of methods for assessing the degree of definition of the design phase of capital projects, highlighting the use of ProjectDefinition Rate Index (PDRI), still little explored in academic circles in Brazil. The study set up guidelines for use of the PDRI in capital projects, and presents case studies where this method was used and the main benefits and difficulties of their use are analyzed, showing its applicability to capital projects in Brazil and neighboring countries.
