Resumen
The burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is defined as a complex disease, which is characterized by the manifestation of symptoms of burning, burning or pain in the mouth and lips, with the normal mucosa. The female is preferentially affected, with 86% to 90% of women with symptoms have gone through menopause. Its etiology is not fully understood and is considered by many multifactorial studies, which include, as causal agents, local factors, psychological, systemic and idiopathic. Such controversies make the differential diagnosis difficult, especially if the dental surgeon does not have knowledge about the syndrome. We aimed to present, through a literature review, the main features of the BMS, indicate the procedures which may be useful for diagnosis, the forms of treatment available, increase the knowledge of health workers about this issue, through a plan intervention, with strategies for action of dental surgeon, along with the multidisciplinary team to act as agents in promoting health. In the literature review were used descriptors health sciences: burning mouth syndrome, etiology, diagnosis, diseases of the mouth, in the Lilacs, SCIELO, Google Scholar, articles published in the period between 1987 and 2013 with an emphasis on the current. With these data was elaborated an action plan with project professional training of health team including lectures demystifying the disease for patients and their families, cognitive therapy for them as well as encouragement for physical activity. These actions have been proposed to treat or at least alleviate the suffering of patients with this syndrome that affects your family and social acquaintanceship.
