This is a descriptive study aiming to analyse infant mortality in Itabirito/MG, between 1996 and 2007 with emphasis on newborn deaths. The data source was the Mortality Information System available on the DATASUS site. The mortality rate was calculated per infant mortality components and the main causes for newborn deaths were identified according to the International Classification of Diseases chapter, 10th version. The absolute death figure of infants was 127, being 63 early newborns, 15 late newborns and 49 post-newborns. There was significant decrease in infant mortality during the time span analysed, but early newborn mortality rate was unaltered and it is the main mortality component in the first year of life. Among early newborn deaths, perinatal causes prevail.
