Classical ballet and modern dance dancers have a high incidence of musculoskeletal injuries (ALLEN et al., 2013), which can bring financial losses to dance companies (FUHRMANN et al., 2010), and may represent the end of the dancers careers (HANSEN and REED, 2006). In order to reduce such damage, the aim of this study was to review the literature on injury prevention programs in classical and modern dance dancers. The search for articles was performed without language restrictions in the databases LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature), Medline (International Literature on Health Sciences), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library On Line) and PEDRo (Physiotherapy Evidence Database), from June 2018 to April 2019. We found 157 articles in total. After reading the title, 147 were excluded because they were not related to the theme of injury prevention in dancers and one due to duplicity. That left nine articles selected for full reading. After the full reading of the articles, four were excluded for not evaluating injury prevention as the main outcome in the study and one article was excluded because it did not specify in the body of the text which dance mode the dancers evaluated in the study. Of the four studies included, three analyzed the effects of implementing injury prevention programs on ballet and modern dance companies and one assessed the effect of oral vitamin D supplementation on ballet dancers on injury prevention. All four studies found a statistically significant reduction in the number of injuries after interventions. Therefore, it appears that ballet and modern dance dancers may benefit from the implementation of preventive programs such as the implementation of injury management programs within dance companies and oral vitamin D supplementation in dancers with serum 25(OH)D deficiency.
