dc.description.abstractAlthough the process of deinstitutionalization determines the inclusion of people with mental distress in society, there are many variables that hinder the autonomous and independent social movement within the community. Some skills and mastery of activities are needed for optimal performance Occupational and community life, among them Instrumental Activities of Dayli Living (IADL). They constitute the goals of treatment of occupational therapist, in which improving the skills. Objectives: To investigate, through literature review, the approach of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and their relations with social participation of persons with mental disorders. Methods: We searched the following electronic databases: Lilacs, Medline, SciELO, OTseeker, EBSCOhost (CINAHL), BIREME, and search the portal Capes. Search was also made to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy (AJOT). We used the key words: activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, mental health / behavioral Difficulties, mental illness. We considered the following criteria: outcome whose approach was some IADL, people with mental disorders, and be an original article. The study included ten articles that met these requirements. Results: The articles surveyed made the correlation between the IADL and social participation, positive results for inclusion in the community. The main variables were correlated to the context in which individuals were treated or inserted and the type of intervention, besides the social participation itself. Conclusion: IADL were found associated with social participation and can be addressed in task-based interventions in natural contexts such as home and community, in order to maximize the results of interventions of the Occupational Therapist.
