Resumen
The mining one of the primary activities in the productive chain, has influences on
societies’ everyday life, being present in most consumer goods. This activity has different
phases (research, project development, mineral production itself and mine closure), each one
with an environmental and mining legislation to be fulfilled. But this activity, beyond mere
compliance with the law, had to incorporate over the years sustainability concepts that aimed
at Tripple Bottom Line: Economic, Social and Environmental, to meet the deem ands of a
increasingly demanding in these aspects society. In this context, this work presents a literature
review on: History of mining, Mining Phases and their socioeconomic and environmental
relations, Sustainability in the context of Mining and a Perception Study of society about the
industry, which uses the same tool to work an assessment of initial perception and changes in
this perception before offered information about the activity. The study conducted with a
sample of 200 high school students from public and private schools, from the city of Itaituba,
in Pará State, found that respondents recognized the importance of mining, while knowing
little about the activity and the taxation of the sector, in this case, CFEM. The study also
showed that, facing the information received, the receptivity of mining interviewed improved
demonstrating that information about the industry can be a good way to reduce this problem
that is the communication between the company and society. The further the information and
clarification are spread, there will be an increasing comprehension regarding the topic and
consequently a more qualified discussion that favor obtaining social license to mine and
therefore bring directions to the effective pursuit of sustainable development.
