Resumen
The dental care for patients with heart disease requires a special attention from the entire health team, mainly from the dentist, due to the risks related to the oral health interventions. In this reality, this literature review study aimed to describe the most relevant cardiovascular changes to the care of cardiac patients in health units (outpatient), as well as reporting the main measures to be taken at this dental care. it was a search on BVS and PubMed databases for the period 2003 to 2013, using the following keywords: heart diseases, cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular drugs, dentistry, oral health, health unit, the basic attention to health. It was carried out a search in books and manuals relating to the theme. It was noted that, generally, the major heart diseases are triggered by changes in the level of anxiety of patients, which are common just by the fact that these patients they will be submitted to oral treatment. Knowing the stress level of cardiac patients, what medications they are using, as well as their systemic condition, is conduct to be adopted by the dentist during the anamnesis, and he/she should also be aware of the possible oral manifestations produced by the use of anti-hipertensive. The pharmacological control of anxiety takes leading role in dental care of the cardiac patients. As the growing and aging of the Brazilian population is accompanied by high number of cardiovascular diseases, it is important to elaborate an dental care action plan for patients with cardiovascular diseases to be attended in the health units of the SUS, particularly in the primary care, since those individuals consist of a risk group whose care should be priority.
