Resumen
Sarcopenia can be defined as a syndrome characterized by a progressive and
generalized loss of muscle mass and strength related to age. Even making a
conservative estimate, sarcopenia affects today more than 50 million people and will
affect more than 200 million over the next 40 years. Individuals who have lower
muscle strength have a greater risk of mobility limitation, and those with less muscle
mass are at increased risk of inability to perform activities of daily living. Since
sarcopenia causes significant adverse effects on the elderly, it is of paramount
importance to know to evaluate and treat it. The aim of this study was to identify,
through a literature review, which are the effects of resistance training on sarcopenia
and functionality of community-dwelling elderly. We performed a literature search at
the databases PubMed / Medline, PeDro, Lilacs, SciELO, and CAPES periodics. We
included 05 articles in this review. It was observed that resistance training can
increase muscle strength and mass, improves functional performance and muscle
quality in the elderly. It was also seen that a detraining period can cause a significant
decrease of gains acquired during the exercise period, highlighting the importance of
physical activity for the maintenance of functional capacity in the elderly.
