Resumen
This study is a revision of literature to verify the contribution of mechanism of co-contraction
in the stability of the spine. This mechanism is achieved through of the complex interaction of
the agonists and antagonist muscles of the spinal lumbar. As the instability of the intervertebral
segments can interfere in the system of stabilization and assume relation with the lumbar
dysfunctions, this study discussed the main aspects of this mechanism of the stability of the
spinal lumbar. Scientific searches were done in English and Portuguese on the Google
Academic database, Medline, Lilacs and Pubmed between November of 2014 and January of
2015. The selected studies should present (1) experimental delimitation (2) investigation of the
coactivation of the trunk muscles in situations of disturbance of the spinal lumbar by
electromyographic signals. Studies were excluded in which (1) investigated the intra-abdominal
pressure mechanism, for which wasn't the objective of the study to be considered result of the
muscular co-contraction (2) didn't describe if the levels of muscular stiffness were adequate, as
the response of the muscular co-contraction of the trunk (3) and that no reporting on which
muscular groups activated to generate the mechanism of co-contraction. The total of 4470
articles, six were selected, in which the data of the studies demonstrated that the muscular force
generated by the mechanism of muscular co-contraction can be conducted for compressive
loads in the spinal lumbar structure. Therefore, this research is going to consider the standard
of movement of task performed and the level of co-contraction that may reach.
