Cigarette smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the smoking tobacco in the form of cigarettes or other products containing tobacco, whose drug or active ingredient is nicotine. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that smoking should be considered a pandemic, or a generalized epidemic, as such must be addressed. To achieve a smoker treatment, effectively, programs that address not only the physical issues but also the emotional and cognitive-behavioral therapy are needed, which has been quite effective in treating abuse chemical substances. The Ministry of Health took over, thought the National Cancer Institute, in 1989, the role of organizing the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) with professionals in healthcare trained mainly on patient approach to treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy. This team plays utmost importance over the results of reduced number of cigarettes smoked per day, or even the cessation of smoking among smokers. However, the greatest difficulty in developing this program is the permanence of multiprofessional team, especially in relation to medical category, because there was a lot of changes since the beginning of implementation of the program. The only professional which remained effectively and committed during the whole process was the nurse; being that the psychologist had an outstanding performance by a great period, however, by differentiated professional valuation and even salaries question, this link was recently broken
