Resumen
This dissertation aims to identify how the local market structure in a city fosters the external economies of scale, implying the growth of an industry activity in that city, having, therefore, the city as unity of analysis. Most past studies that addressed this theme utilized, in general, cross-section data. The present study make use of a panel data methodology, allowing to address both the questions of how does past market conditions affect industry growth in a city and the timing of those effects. The results suggest that industrial diversity, industry concentration in the city, and competition among firms in the same industry are significant to explain industrial employment growth in cities.
