Resumen
In this bibliographic review will be presented the importance of the microorganism in
study A. baumannii in intensive care units addressing the microbiological and
epidemiological aspects, its mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, main sites of
infection and measures to control infections caused by this pathogen. It is an
opportunistic bacteria and emerging bringing serious therapeutic complications, difficult
to control, its spread being appointed as responsible for the occurrence of various
hospital outbreaks in intensive care units worldwide. Very worrying is the property of this
species in expressing different mechanisms of resistance against almost all classes of
antimicrobials available for treatment. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the
importance of this microorganism as an agent of nosocomial infections mainly in
intensive care units, noting finally that taking actions and simple measures such as
washing hands, correct environmental hygiene, equipment disinfection and control of
indiscriminate use of antimicrobials, could contribute greatly to reduce the incidence of
nosocomial infections by this bacteria.
