Resumen
The human being has the need for comfort, to feel good in the spaces where he goes and lives daily. When these spaces are perceived by the population as motivating human experiences, they become places. A place in Architecture and Urban Planning is our interaction with where we are, whether this place is a market, a room, a corridor or even a bed. Thus, a nursing home is also a world of places, both static and dynamic. A nursing home is a refuge, a place of protection. When offering more than a shelter, becoming part of the health care institutions, it is suggested the adoption of the denomination Long Term Care Institutions for the Elderly (ILPI) for this new type of institution. The architecture of these institutions must be oriented to the needs of the elderly, meeting legal requirements. Regarding lighting comfort, there are specific rules to guarantee the minimum of natural lighting in each type of environment. For this monography, three institutions for the elderly were visited in the city of Belo Horizonte - MG, Brazil. The architectural survey was held in only one of these institutions, which was used for lighting analysis in the rooms. A good natural lighting project can provide quality of life to residents of a nursing home and be more sustainable for the environment.
