Objectives : Treatment of intrabuccal bone defects has been a challenge in the dental field and researches to discover new drugs to optimize regenerative surgical outcomes are extremely important. This experimental study in animal model aimed to evaluate the effect of RSr orally administered in repair of intrabuccal bone defects in rats. Methodology: Twenty Lewis rats were divided into 4 groups; 2 control groups and 2 test groups, followed for 14 and 42 days. Both groups were submited to the surgical procedure to create a standardized bone defect in the alveolar distal roots region of the first molar. The test groups received a daily dose of 625 mg / kg orally RSr and control groups received placebo. Fragments of the maxillary operated were processed for histology and morphometry of bone formation. Results: In 14 days the histological results showed similar patterns of healing in the two groups. However, after 42 days the test group seemed to have better bone organization, compatible with a discrete advanced stage of bone maturation .Histomorphometric evaluation revealed a higher rate of bone deposition in the 14 days treated group when compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The animals followed for 42 days showed no statistical difference in histomorphometric parameters evaluated. Conclusion: The RSr seems to accelerate the process of bone formation. These results open up favorable prospects for application of RSR as an adjuvant therapy where the acceleration of bone repair can anticipate the functional rehabilitation of patients.
