Resumen
The microbiological quality of raw material used and the handling process of herbal
medicines are the key factors to achieve efficiency and safety of the final product. This present
study aims to verify the microbiological quality of herbal medicines in handing pharmacies
Divinópolis-MG. Four samples from two herbal drugs (Carqueja and Cascara Sagrada, raw material
and final product) were collected in four pharmacies in Divinópolis-MG, properly packaged and
labeled. These samples were analyzed according to the Pharmacopoeia 5th ed. (2010). The results
of the analyzes of total count of mesophilic aerobic pathogens and research revealed that 50% of
samples were below the standards for fungi, pharmacy. About pathogenic analyses, one of the
establishments presented positive for the bacteria Escherichia coli in samples of raw material and
end product of Cascara Sagrada being unfit for human consumption, showing a correlation between
contamination of mesophilic aerobic and pathogens. Pharmacy D showed positive results for the
sample of E. coli in Cascara Sagrada final product, suggesting that microbial contamination has
occurred in the process of handling the product. In view of these results becomes greater oversight
as necessary and taking measures to minimize the risk of contamination of these products.
