Being a woman, young, worker and student are different dimensions marked by asymmetries
in cultural, economic, political, educational and leisure practices. This dissertation aimed to
verify the perceptions of the young trainees attending the Education and Work Program (PET)
developed by CDL Pró-Criança Foundation, about the influence of their jobs, education levels
and gender on their leisure practices. The adopted methodology was qualitative, quantitative,
bibliographical, descriptive and documental. During data collection, a questionnaire was
applied along with a semi structured interview putting young trainees together, in order to
identify what the youths understand about leisure and to describe their perception of leisure
practices in their spare time. Another semi structured interview was composed by the program
supervisors for investigating how leisure is addressed by PET. Results showed that either young
ladies or supervisors understand leisure as diverting moments with friends, families or even
alone, relaxing, entertaining, enjoying the weekend, enjoying the spare time and doing whatever
is wanted without obligations. Regarding cultural activities practiced by the young trainees,
social and virtual interests prevailed. The youths reported they had time for enjoying leisure
although a significant number of girls revealed difficulties related to money availability and the
lack of security. With respect to their jobs, joining PET was mainly an alternative for entering
the job market, considering the acquirement of work experience as the principal advantage.
Their job as trainees, in her perceptions, do not interfere in their studies, once they still have
free time for enjoying leisure activities. With regard to gender, they do not notice differences
in the distribution or in the amount of responsibilities when compared to the opposite sex, even
if they think there is an asymmetry concerning housework. Finally, it was possible to conclude
through the supervisors’interview that despite the low leisure-time load spend in cultural
activities, professionals are aware of the importance of leisure for the youths and the issue is
transversally addressed in the program subjects. The supervisors also recognize the influence
of income in the sort of leisure enjoyed by the youths. When considering the use of mobile
devices, even in low income families, supervisors reported rare cases of students without access.
The use of these tools is still forbidden during the program. As well as the youths, the
supervisors also notice differences in leisure enjoyment when it comes to gender. They
recognize how the job plays a central role in the youths’ lives and they agree the girls are
deprived of leisure because of the time spent working, studying and performing other activities.
According to them, the job does not interfere in the students’ school performance. Analysing
the results, a discussion involving prospected theoreticians was prepared, leading to suggestions
towards improving the program in order to develop an education based on leisure.
