Resumen
n the present work, we investigated the organization of the secondary education of Minas Gerais during the Brazilian Imperial period. We analyzed its importance, its use and its role in the formation and preparation of the youth elite of Minas Gerais. Our main objective was to show the meanings and the contents of the secondary education implemented in the Minas Gerais province, problematizing the production of a pedagogic culture of that teaching level. For that, we took into consideration both he study of the permanence of the detached classes as the attempts of organization of the schools and external schools in Minas Gerais. The main sources used were he legislation produced regarding the secondary education of Minas Gerais, and the Speeches and the Reports of the Presidents of the Province (1835-1889), delivered o the provincial Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais. We believed that the secondary education of Minas Gerais, initially distributed in detached classes hroughout the province, only had a better structure in the fifties with the creation of he Liceu Mineiro and with the absorption of the detached classes by the private schools. In the last decades of the Empire, the Provincial Government established in Minas Gerais six public external schools, reducing the subsidy to the private schools. Even with the creation of those external schools, the secondary education stayed with emphasis to the literary knowledge and continued with the beginner character.
