dc.description.abstractThe growth of the elderly population has caused an increase in the number of chronic degenerative diseases , especially hypertension leading them to depend on treatment and changes in lifestyle . The work aims to conduct a literature on hypertension in the elderly . The knowledge will apply to clinical practice in the care of primary care , improving care hypertensive elderly patients and preventing systemic complications associated with this disease . This is a study of the literature review that seeks information and data available in publications . The results show that hypertension has a high prevalence in the general population and is the main modifiable risk factor associated with cardiovascular disease , your risk increases progressively with high blood pressure as well as with age being the most common chronic disease among the elderly and the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease , and are more susceptible to complications of hypertension . Brazil in cardiovascular disease has been the leading cause of death however this number has been gradually reduced in recent decades , but cardiovascular disease still account for a very high number of hospitalizations , causing high medical and socioeconomic costs . Clinical studies show that early diagnosis and good control of hypertension reduces cardiovascular events . Its prevalence increases with age , the prevalence is even higher in obese and alcoholics , generally excessive salt intake has been associated with increased blood pressure , and sedentary lifestyle . The implementation of preventive measures is a challenge for health professionals and managers . Primary prevention and early detection and proper treatment are the most effective ways to avoid the complications of this disease . And should be priority targets for health professionals.
