Resumen
Aging is a subject discussed worldwide. The decline of muscle mass and muscle function (sarcopenia) can often lead to disabilities and physical dependence on others. In 2010, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) proposed that sarcopenia be recognized as a geriatric syndrome, because of its high prevalence in the elderly and its complex nature. In addition, the general consensus was that these diagnoses were based on the reduction of muscle mass and strength as it relates to physical performance. Aging itself seems to be a contributing factor in vitamin D reduction. However, there is yet to be a conclusive study on the influence of vitamin D behavior and diagnostic criteria for geriatric syndrome. The objective of this study is to investigate the association of vitamin D deficiency and sarcopenia in aging, through an integrative review on this subject. For this study, a bibliographic survey of scientific articles published between January 2000 and October 2017 was carried out in the LILACS, PubMed and SCOPUS database. Only three articles met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 8,769 individuals. The selected studies reported a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and sarcopenia (p <0.05), especially in the female group. Based on the findings found in the included articles, this integrative review revealed that there is indeed a significant correlation between vitamin D deficiency and the presence of sarcopenia, despite differences in definitions found. More studies are needed for a better understanding of this association
