This research aims to investigate how the application of Design for Disassembly (DfD) in buildings can contribute to sustainability in civil construction, as well as to comprehend the potentials and restrictions of it. The research was carried out by means of a literature review, contributing to present a synthesis of the state of the art on the application of DfD to buildings. Designing a project for disassembly adds to the development of strategies to expand the useful life of the building and the recoverability potential of its materials and components, reflecting on waste reduction and on the functioning of a circular dynamics within civil construction, mainly through reuse. It is believed that the main contribution of this study is the presentation of a new approach in which buildings are considered as material banks. At the end, the EU2020 project developed by the European Union (EU) is presented, Buildings as Materials Banks (BAMB), which makes a significant contribution to future changes in the way buildings will be designed, constructed and used. Herein the topics Materials Passports and Reversible Building Design may be highlighted. At last, it is concluded that DfD is an essential approach to allow construction sustainability and that, due to its relevance, it is necessary to follow the development of current proposals and stimulate new research and projects that enable the practical application of the method.
