This research was conducted in a primary school in the city of Belo Horizonte to investigates how the relationship between families and the school works and to understand what is the perspective of parents and guardians about this.
The research develops a brief history about basic education as a child right, highlighting the concept of children education and how it is implemented at the EMEIs (Municipal Schools of Children Education) in Belo Horizonte.
In order to understand the relationship between family and school and comprehend the perspective of parents and guardians about this relationship, we sought to analyse the understanding of family and school towards the view of theorists such as: Heloísa Szymanski (2010), Vitor Henrique Paro ( 2007), the authors Beate Althuon, Corina Essle, Isa S. Stoeber (1996).
The research includes exploratory study and descriptive approaches in a qualitative perspective using methodological resources, such as: questionnaires, document analysis, interviews with the mothers of the pupils using flexible and semi-open scripts, attendance of meetings and events as a way of observation and action search elements, based on the concepts of Tim May (2004).
The group of parents and guardians that were approached are in the afternoon shift of half-time classes with children aged 1 to 5 years. There were 10 classes totalling 177 students. 170 of those students took the questionnaires to their homes and of which 116 of these questionnaires were returned.
The questionnaires and attendance lists analysed the presence of families in meetings, events, school attendance of pupils and how the care is organised by the school towards families.
The results shows that parents in general are satisfied with the family and school relationship. However aspects such as the need for better systematisation of the pedagogical work were also shown widening the gaps in this relationship.
We consider that the family and the school relationship in children education is an important factor for this educational stage and needs essential planning that respects the diversity of families and the importance of living in the school.
