Resumen
This study aims to show the main features of financing innovation of Brazilian companies, bringing some of the funding mechanisms promoted by Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos (Funding for Studies and Projects, FINEP), Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (National Bank of Economic and Social Development, BNDES) and some incentive mechanisms such as the Lei do Bem and the Lei de Informática. In order to make the analysis more complete, we have used data from Pesquisa Inovação Tecnológica (Technological Innovation Research, PINTEC) held by IBGE, for the years 2000, 2003 and 2005. We have also used special tabulations of the latest edition. The analysis covers the financing according to industrial sectors, size of the companies, geographic regions and government's support to innovation. Moreover, we have highlightened the use of risk capital by the public and private sectors to finance innovation, since it is a driver that has gained importance regarding the innovation in Brazil.
