Resumen
OBJECTIVE: This review evaluates the available data for the efficacy of Mulligans technique mobilization with movement (MWM) for treatment of lateral ankle sprain. METHODS: A search of English, Spanish and Portuguese articles was performed on databases MEDLINE, PEDro, Cochrane Library, SciELO and LILACS for the use of MWM on lateral ankle sprain. RESULTS: There were five selected interventional studies, two case studies and three randomized controlled trials (RTC) on patients with acute, subacute, chronic and chronic recurrent lateral ankle sprain. From the measured outcomes, there is evidence of increased dorsiflexion range of movement (ROM) in weight bearing from four in five studies. Pain reduction was shown in one study of two individuals submitted to a sequence of treatment sessions and there was no change in one RTC after a single treatment session. There was improved inversion ROM in the two case studies. Function gains and reduction of posterior talar glide deficit were shown in a case study and a RTC, respectively. The evaluation of two MWM techniques, weight bearing and non-weight bearing, in a RTC found significant positive and similar outcomes. CONCLUSION: There is evidence of increased dorsiflexion after weight bearing and non-weight bearing MWM application in individuals with acute, subacute, chronic and chronic recurrent lateral ankle sprain. The clinical relevance of these findings depends on the provability of correlation between this gain and functional improvements. Most studies showed a lack of function and pain assessment, the basic goals of this technique application on clinical practice. There is a need of larger studies focusing on these outcomes and sequential treatment.
