When we feel danger approaching, we cannot, with impunity, reject the appeal of images of the past, as Walter Benjamin teaches us. We reflect here on the reawakening of a certain modality of archival image - the portraits of identity / identification - in the work Immemorial (Rosângela Rennó, 1994) and in the film 48 (Susana de Sousa Dias, 2009). In a sense, these portraits are vestiges of a scene produced under the rules of disciplinary power; in another sense, these vestiges are reworked within the texture of the works and contribute to a smaller or greater opening of the images, so that they can bring to light their reverse.
