Resumen
Periodontal disease is a bacteriologic, chronic, progressive infection which can cause tooth loose. Dental biofilm, enviromental, socioeconomic and biological facts are essential for PD beggining and evolution. New paradigms are being added to periodontology based in a twoway relationship, in which PD influences and is influenced by systemic disease. Recognized earlier as a consequence PD can cause metastatic infection being a risk factor to cardiopathy, vascular pathologies, diabetes, pulmonary disease, low weight and pre-term birth, and others. This study aims to assess PD as risk to other diseases and to suggest a conduct protocol for Family Health Team (FHT). Four systemic events related to PD were separately described: cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, maternity and diabetes. PD risk factors identification and control are important to planning, treating and preventing this complex clinical entity. Periodontal care must be in close relationship with general health care, for this, it's important the correct action of FHTs facing systemic disease that can be related to periodontitis.
