This paper proposes a methodology for the mapping of competences of technical and administrative staff in a Brazilian Federal Institution of Higher Education, emphasizing the need of a new emphasis for personnel management. The structure of work discusses: the management of people, conceptions competence, knowledge management and strategies for the mapping of competences. Such discussion is based on the processes associated with the functional life of the workers, which is regulated by the Plan of Carrer and Technical and Administrative Positions in Education (PCCTAE). Mechanisms and suggested to enable the identification, collection, organization and dissemination of information related to workers competence and / or knowledge.
