Resumen
OBJECTIVE: To review the literature to investigate and discuss the efficacy of exercise programs in preventing functional decline in individuals with dementia. METHODS: Medline / PubMed, SciELO, PEDro and Cochrane databases were searched from February to May 2017 for papers that documented the effects of physical exercises on daily living, balance and mobility activities in individuals with insanity. Studies published in the last 5 years were selected for this review. Data were extracted in a standardized way from each study and the methodological quality was evaluated using the PEDro scale. RESULTS: 371 studies were found in the initial search, of which sixteen were selected for this review. Regarding the evaluation of the quality of the evidence of the works, the scores varied between 4/10 and 8/10 on the PEDro scale. The protocols and instruments used presented diversities. The synthesis at levels of evidence has shown that there is strong evidence of positive effects of physical exercise on balance. It was not possible to perform the classification in levels of evidence for activities of daily living (ADL) and mobility. CONCLUSION: Interventions based on physical exercises lead to an improvement in the balance of elderly people with dementia. The studies present conflicting results regarding the impact of exercises on independence in activities of daily living and mobility.
