Resumen
The activation of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) is, not only an addition to
an aesthetic obsession, but also a need for the proper functioning of the knees.
This paper aims, therefore, to conduct a systematic review of studies that
address the electromyography (EMG) of the VMO in different exercises, in order
to determine whether there is the possibility of preferential activation of these
muscles. Three main exercises were stipulated for the study: squat, leg press
and knee extension. The articles included are all available in English and they
were published between the year 2000 and 2015. The databases used were
pubmed, researchgate and CAPES journals. Two out of the ten articles directly
used for EMG analysis showed a preferential activation of VMO, yet with
decisive limitations to practice. On the other hand, the data found in these two
papers suggests new research involving knee alignment analysis of individuals,
using unstable surfaces and also the use of taping technique.
