Resumen
This thesis investigates the internationalization process of the Brazilian flat steel industry. By analyzing specifically its determinant or motivating factors, the entry mode strategies adopted and the main results achieved by the four companies which comprises the sector, the research aims to characterize this process, since the installation of the industry, in de 40s, until the first decade of the 21th century. In order to reach this goal, the case study method was adopted due to its strengths as a useful technique allowing in-depth examination of the internationalisation process developed in each of the four enterprises analyzed. The research has used primary and secondary data collected in the companies, obtained by means of documents and bibliography research, as well as open and not-declared interviews, oriented by semi-structured questionnaires and performed through with the top executives involved inthe internationalization process of each company. The data was treated by analyzing the answers and information collected, through a comparative approach, in order to show the differences and similarities in the involvement of the companies with the international market. The results of the research shows different ways adopted by the enterprises in their internationalization, though they went through a same pattern of insertion, having the decisive contribution of foreign capitals in the form of direct investment, joint-venture formation and financing of its establishment, as well as the predominance of exports, strategic alliances, joint-venture formation and direct investment in the outward perspective of the process. The mains determinant factors of the involvement with international markets were related to the structure of the industry, the government and private capital interests, the search ofcompetitiveness to serve different markets and also to many economic and comportamental aspects discussed in the literature. In general, the companies reached their goals, although some movements appeared to be failed. The researcher found some limitations to evaluate their results.
