The metal reservoirs used for water storage are usually made of ASTM A-36 steel plates calendered and welded through the GMAW or SMAW processes, depending on the manufacturing site, whether in closed sheds or in the field. The manufacturing processes may introduce discontinuities in welded joints, such as lack of fusion, lack of penetration, porosity, biting, inclusions among others, which may compromise the structure or component with respect to crack propagation resistance and even Mechanical resistance. The present work aims to demonstrate the main discontinuities found in welds of metallic reservoirs and their influence on the strength of the welded structure. Most of the discontinuities can be avoided or minimized, since they are directly related with material preparation, welder expertise and quality of consumables.
