The Politics of Public Health and the advancement of studies in health care lead to increased life expectancy, resulting in rapid population aging and the intense. Brazilian elderly has many oral health problems due to lack of programs specific to this age group, the legacy of an iatrogenic-mutilating practices and cultural values. The objective of this study was to evaluate the oral health status in people aged 60 years or more of the Basic Health Unit Jardim Planalto city of São Sebastião do Paraíso, Minas Gerais, Brazil in 2009. The study included 41 people of various ages between 60 and 80 years, with data collection in clinical dental records. The results show the prevalence of tooth loss of 85% for women and 88.4% in men and the replacement of prostheses because they are unsuitable affecting chewing, thus interfering with the quality of their lives. This study indicates the need for programs of general health and oral, that with the support of the Basic Health Units in the Health Strategy for the Family to meet the specific needs of the elderly population.
