dc.description.abstractDespite having good Human Development Index (0,823) and increased number of trauma and cardiovascular disease, Belo Horizonte has high demand of beds for infectious disease in the Emergency Department. The County Hospital Odilon Behrens is public, municipal, general and a school. it has 443 beds and is the main assistance for clinical urgencies and emergencies of the city, being reference to the metropolitan region with its estimated population of 5.068.369 inhabitants in 2007. Its First Aid Station receives an average of 520 patients a day, 25% general practice. This study evaluated the total and relative admissions forinfections at HOB from January the 1st, 2002 to December 31st, 2006, the time of hospitalization, the mortality and their costs. Secondary data were analyzed from the Hospital Information System, DATASUS, Health Ministry, from 2002 to 2006 It was analyzed the number of admissions by diagnosis, the frequency (bed occupancy), the number of deaths and the hospital revenue. The death rate, the average hospitalization period per illness and the infectious diseases ratio in relation to the other causes of hospitalization were calculated. About 89. 986 patients were institutionalized. The number of affections associated to infectionswas 5.399 (6%). Out of 596.888, 55.043 (9,2%) were due to illnesses associated to infections. The average hospitalization period for infection (10,20 days) was longer than for the none infection average (6,41 days). The hospital revenue, whitch represents public expenditure was R$66.012.509,19, R$4.495.202,57 (6,8%) per infection. The death rate ajusted for age per infection was 9,16%, and the rate per other causes was 5,54%. The infectious diseases have high impact on public heath system of Belo Horizonte, not only on number of hospitalized patients,but on beds occupancy, massive expenditure and high morbimortality.
