Resumen
This study had as its goal to review clinical literature to verify if the Pilates method is efficient in reducing pain and restoring function in individuals with chronic lower back pain. To achieve that goal an analysis of studies published in the electronic databases PEDro, BIREME and PubMed using descriptors "Pilates" AND "Chronic low back" AND "Function" AND/OR "Pain". Initially 102 studies were found. Were excluded from this paper studies that did not have a sample constituted solely of individuals with chronic lower back pain, the ones not aiming to reduce the pain and/or improving the function as a result of the intervention and those in which the intervention did not apply the Pilates method. According to this criteria 15 papers were selected. The results of this study suggest that the Pilates Method had success in reducing the pain and improving function in individuals with chronic lower back pain both in short and long term periods. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Pilates method shows efficiency equal or greater than other interventions in most cases and that the Method can also bring other physical benefits to patients beyond those described.
