As the technique of oral dental implants evolued, protocols were made with the purpose of shorten the time of rehabilitator therapy when facing a tooth extraction indication. The general objective of this paper was to do a research on the literature available presently to describe the immediate implant technique. The specifics objectives were: (I) to broach the success rates to immediate implants, (II) to point out indications and counter indications, (III) to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of immediate implantation, (IV) to mention surgical requirements, protocols and techniques that were used with more predictability. In this way, a search of published articles between 2000 and 2014 was conducted, through CAPES portal, on MEDLINE database, using Pubmed Central (PMC) search tool, available on the website <http: //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PMC>. The research was limited to studies made with animals and humans, published in English. Book quoting with clinical approach from 1997 and 2009 were also used as a complementation to this review. Through bibliographical research, using the keywords dental implants, fresh sockets, tooth extractions, immediate dental implant loading, 118 articles were found at first, and after previous reading of the abstracts, 33 articles were chosen for review and discussion of this paper. Regarding this literature review, the main conclusions were: immediate implants show high success rates in osseointegration; they avoy a second surgical state, so, they shorten the total time and cost of treatment; they may need bone tissue graft, associated with membrane use; they must be made by experienced professionals, used to bone regeneration techniques, especially in thin periodontal phenotype and esthetic area cases.
