Resumen
This research is based on studies made on ways of participation in written culture, as on studies on housework. The purpose of this research was to understand the connections that are established between maids and written culture existing on the occupation setting. Four cases of maids with small scholar capital were studied. Maids whose stories of life were marked by a difficult access to written materials, especially during childhood, and also who currently work for employers who are effectively inserted in the written culture considered to be legitimate. The principal objective was to apprehend and reconstruct the practices of reading and writing that constitute the professional occupation, those provided by the occupation setting and also those which are part of their daily lives. Besides that, it was described the types of interpersonal relationship constructed between the maids and their employers and their influence on the maids relation with writing. It was used the qualitative analysis as a strategy of research. The data was collected by interviews with the maids and their employers and by observations realized in their residences. It was verified that the occupation of maids in a literate environment approximates, in a certain way, these women to the written world due to two major factors: 1st) in order to exercise the occupation, domestic reading and writing practices which arent common on their environment of origin are demanded and, 2nd) , the contact with a variety of written materials, the occasional observation of the employers reading and writing practices and their own commitment in reading and writing practices intrinsic to work stimulate reading and writing in situations different from those experienced in their origin families.
