Resumen
Neck disorders can cause pain and disabling conditions in an individual and result in
dysfunctions in the components proposed by the International Classification of
Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). It is important to use tools that address the
functionality to measure the impact of dysfunction in activities of daily living and to
identify if they are reliable and valid, which allows its use in clinical practice. This
study aim to critically review the literature about the instruments used for functional
assessment in subjects with neck pain and their psychometric data. After a search in
Medline, Lilacs, SciELO and IBECS databases, 11 instruments were selected and
analyzed. The Functional Rating Scale (FRI) and the Patient-Specific Functional
Scale (PSFS) showed the best psychometric data and were the most recommended
to assess complaints regarding the functioning of individuals with neck pain.
However, the translation and cultural adaptation of these instruments to portuguese
occurred in samples of individuals with low back pain. Regarding the FRI and PSFS,
we suggest checking their applicability in a sample with neck pain in Brazil.
