We assume that Dark Energy" (of a fixed small region of space at the present cosmic time) may be identified with the system consisting of the vacuum and of a few one-particle states of zero momentum of a scalar quantum field of mass u different 0. Under this assumption we show that local quantum field theory yields a corresponding energy momentum tensor of the perfect fuid form, and that a strictly positive energycan be localized only in regions of linear dimension L of the order of the particle Compton wave-length 1/u. Some early conjectured values for the \axion" rest-mass yield an estimate 1:44x10-56+4GeV4 for the dark energy density. In this way, we hope to have "made a case" for revisiting the Casimir theory of dark energy, proposed in 2002 by M. Turner.
