Resumen
Brazil still has a large untapped energy potential that should be used to increase the stock of electricity generation. These resources are available in regions far from the major consuming centers, including for example, the hydroelectric potential of the Tocantins River basin, Madeira River and the offshore wind potential. Evaluations have shown that for large distances and for the subsea system, the use of a high voltage direct current transmission, HVDC, is economically more viable thantraditional high voltage alternating current transmissions, HVAC.This work consists in the study of a new multilevel converter topology, with applications in high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) andthe Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). To improve the systemsperformance the selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation was used. The multiple cuts ellipsoidal algorithm was used to find the angle of the selective harmonic elimination (SHE-PWM). Furthermore, a study was done on selecting cells in accordance with the modulation index. Three control techniques are proposed and validated, which are: phase angle shift control, modulation index control and active and reactive power control. In addition, an algorithm was implemented to balance the voltage on the floating capacitors converters. The systems behavior was analyzed through computer simulations, control techniques and the modulation were compared with multiple indices performances.
