dc.description.abstract | This work investigates how to apply the concept of design to the movies, and the influence of technology on film design. Film can be seen as the (re)creation of artificial worlds in sequences of pieces of space. It was verified that film can also be seen as a visual identity system. The ransportation of design concepts to cinema has helped to unite separate departments under a unified look. The production design defines the overall look of a film through the combination of visual elements such as the set design, the lighting, and the costume design. Sets are the most notable element of the visual group, and it can be attributed with meaning, as well as be manipulated to visually communicate certain aspects of a film´s narrative. The origin of the use of the designconcept in the movies was researched through the analysis of set design evolution. It was verified that many of the films that are important in the art direction/production design area, had used the available technology to enhance the image´s quality both technically and aesthetically. Descriptive analysis of some of these films have shown that technology expands the limits of creativity, by allowing the editing of cinematicspace through the combining of images from different sources. Finally, it was concluded that the conjunction of design and technology opens new ways for the creation of digital sets, as well as digital creatures, and also that technology enhances the cinematic experience when it is used as a handy tool as opposed to the main attraction. | |
