Resumen
Drawing on Sperber & Wilsons (1986/1995) Relevance Theory (RT), this M.A thesis aims at explaining how expert translators process conceptual and procedural encodings conveyed in a given source text when construing meaning in their target texts. RT argues that one of the ways to answer this question lies in the study of linguistically encoded information. Accordingly, this thesis focuses on the analyses of editing procedures performed in eight translation problems, selected inductively, by classifying and quantifying them in terms of conceptual, procedural or hybrid encodings. Thus, we hope to investigate the relationship between cognitive effort and contextual effect in relation to the processing of conceptual and procedural encodings performed by expert translators. To achieve this end, we formulated four investigative hypotheses and used an empirical-experimental methodology to analyze data collected with the key-logging software Translog (Jakobsen and Schou, 1999) and the eye-tracking software Tobii Studio (Göpferich, Jakobsen e Mees, 2008), as well as retrospective protocols (Ericsson, 2001). The search engine Litterae (Alves & Vale, 2009) was used to analyze translation process data according to relevant-theoretic aspects. Our findings build on Alves and Gonçalves (2012) and hope to contribute to translation process research by adding an eye tracking component to their previous study.
