Optimization of superlattices with central quantum well and all-optical logic gates

In this work, two study cases linking nanotechnology and computer are studied. In the first case, superlattices of quantum wells are optimized through a genetic algorithm with the target to find structures with specific energy-band configuration. The results obtained demonstrate that the GA is an adequate computational techniques to optimize this kind of structures. The best superlattices of quantum wells found have great potential to be growth in order to develop new optoelectronics devices such as photodetectors.In the second case, photonic crystal waveguides are used to control the light beam interference effect with the goal to design all-optical logic devices. Two new logic gates in photonic crystals are proposed: the Majority and Feynman gates. Additionally, a methodology to evaluate the fault tolerance of these devices is performed. The results show that these devices are robust and reliable with 95% of confidence level and have great potential to be implemented physically.
