Determinantes de la rentabilidad de los bancos en Colombia: ¿importa la tasa de cambio?

Abstract

This article studies the main determinants of commercial banks´ profitability in Colombia for the period January 2000 – May 2007. We estimate the effects of movements in the COP / USD exchange rate on bank profitability, in different moments we use cross-sectional time-series methodologies and correct for possible autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity, frequently present in these types of data. Our results indicate that the cumulative effect of movements in the exchange rate on banks´ assets are statistically significant but low in magnitude.
