Resumen
Smoking is considered a chronic addictive disease that causes premature death in more than half of the individuals who suffer from it, meanwhile the harmful consumption of alcohol is described as the number of grams or alcoholic beverages ingested. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between smoking and alcohol consumption in active students belonging to the Santo Tomás University, Bucaramanga section. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study carried out in 325 students in the period between August and November 2020. Descriptive, bivariate and multiple analyzes were performed using logistic regression models. To collect the information, the AUDIT and C4 questionnaires were used. Results: The median sedentary behavior of the study population was 7 hours (IR: 4 - 10), 5.85% of the students reported being an active smoker; There is a higher frequency of consumption and number of alcoholic beverages in men than in women. Regarding the risk classification, the percentage of men classified with “risk consumption” and “harmful consumption” of alcohol is higher. When adjusting for sex, age, socioeconomic level, and academic semester, risky alcohol consumption was associated with a higher risk of being a smoker (OR: 2.78, 95% CI: 1.399 - 5.282, P = 0.003). Conclusions: With regard to alcohol consumption, men present higher rates than women, this being a statistically significant figure. It was also found that participants who had risky alcohol use are more likely to be tobacco users.
