There is a world-wide concern with the care and preservation of the environment and specifically the aquatic reserves. Heavy metals like Lead (Pb), Chromium (Cr), Arsenic (As), Nickel (Ni) and Copper (Cu), can be introduced into the environment producing contamination of soils, water, vegetables and animals as well human beings producing adverse health effects. This study was carried out in Villarrica and Pellaifa lakes (39º13’ S y 72º06’ O, 39º34’ S y 71º56’ O respectively) since they are like to be pristinic ecosystems. Each element was investigated in Scirpus californicus, a relatively abundant acuatic plant present in both lakes. The plant was divided in three sections; root, rhizome and tail. Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry ( F-AAS) was used to analyze Cu, Cr, Pb and Hydride generator to analize As. Results show that the highest concentration were obtained in the root of the plant with values being for Pb: 7,55 mg/Kg, Cr: 12,3 mg/Kg, Ni: 64,04 mg/Kg, dry weight. The sampling site with the highest concentration of these elements was Pucón. The highest concentrations of As were found in Pellaifa lake. These results agree with those obtained in water and sediment by Quiroz et al ( 1998).
