An aim of farmers, researchers and professionals related to agriculture is to maximise the use of pasture without negatively affecting its production and persistence. A consequence of this would be to obtain a high animal production, expressed as beef or milk. The hypothesis of the present research was that daily rotational grazing systems would allow fattening steers to have higher live weight gain per animal and per hectare in relation to rotational systems with less grazing frequency. Also intensive an grazing system would negatively affect the pasture persistency and the soil physical features. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect three grazing intensities in rotational systems over pasture, animals and soil properties. The experiment was carried out at INIA’s Remehue Regional Research Centre. A permanent pasture was divided into three paddocks and seven Friesian steers were assigned to each one. In each paddock was applied a different grazing rotational system was applied. The first paddock was divided in 56 grazing stripes, which constituted the daily rotational system (T1). The second paddock was divided into 19 grazing stripes, which meant to move the animals from one stripe to the next one every three days (T2). The third paddock was subdivided in 8 grazing stripes, which implied to keep the animals grazing during 7 days each sector. The paddocks were grazed completely three times. In Winter the steers were supplemented with pasture hay. The forage mass production was evaluated every 28 days using the exclusion cage system. The samples were dried and the forage dry matter mass was obtained. Once a month the available pasture mass was measured before grazing and immediately after grazing through the capacitance probe technique. At the beginning and at the end of the experiment, the botanical composition of the pasture was assessed through manual separation. During spring (november 2002), the tiller population per square meter was obtained. Soil features as bulk density and porosity were examined at the end of the experiment, and samples analized in the Soil Institute of the Universidad Austral de Chile. To control changes in live weigh of the animals, steers was weighted every 28 days. A randomised complete block design was applied. The data were analysed through the statistical package SAS version 6.12 and Statgraphics Plus 2.0. After three cycles of grazing, a higher instantaneous stocking rate did not generate physical changes in the soil. The results did not show statistically significant differences amongst treatments for accumulated pasture mass, grazing utilisation of the pasture and botanical composition. The legumes density show a statistical difference in the daily rotational system. The live weight of steers was not statistically significant different among the treatments.
